No fewer than 98 serving members of the House of Representatives are set to leave the Green Chamber after the 2027 general elections, following their failure to secure tickets to return to the House or their decision to pursue higher elective positions.
A state-by-state review showed that about 262 serving lawmakers have secured tickets to contest their seats again, either on the platforms of their current parties or after defecting to other political parties.
Among those who will not return are several principal officers of the House, including the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo); Deputy Chief Whip, Isiaka Ayokunle Isiaka (APC, Ogun); Minority Leader, Fred Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa); Deputy Minority Whip, Manu Soro (PDP, Bauchi); Deputy Minority Leader, Abdulsamad Dasuki (ADC, Sokoto); and Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi (NDC).
Only the Chief Whip, Usman Bello Kumo, and Deputy House Leader, Abdullahi Ali, among the principal officers, secured tickets to return to the House.
Soro and Dasuki reportedly opted not to seek reelection and consequently did not participate in the primaries.
Kano State recorded the highest number of returning members, with 23 of its 24 serving representatives securing tickets. Lagos followed with 15 returnees out of 24, while Kaduna recorded 15 returnees from its 16-member delegation.
The review also showed that several lawmakers who defected from their former parties, particularly in Kano and Rivers states, secured tickets to contest on the platforms of their new parties.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is fielding about 21 female candidates for House of Representatives seats and seven female candidates for senatorial seats across the country.
Among the PDP’s female House of Representatives candidates are Umoh Esther Robson for Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo in Akwa Ibom; Okeke Chidinma Ngozi for Onitsha North/Onitsha South; Okoli Ogochukwu Evangeline for Aguata; Okafor Jenifer for Oyi/Ayamelum; Onuora Helen Uju for Njikoka/Dunukofia/Anaocha; and Chita Chiamaka Modester for Idemili North/Idemili South, all in Anambra State.
Others include Garba Maryam Bagel for Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa in Bauchi; Edom Peace Eyo for Calabar.
South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi in Cross River; Blessing Chinazam for Abakaliki/Izzi in Ebonyi; Jemitola Elizabeth for Akoko-Edo in Edo; Nwadike Peace Adanma and Iheme Ndidi Olachi Ulumna for constituencies in Imo; Isiyaku Suwaiba for Ngaski/Shanga/Yauri in Kebbi; and Omoshola Gbemisola Holymary for Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos.
The PDP’s other female House candidates include Akinsanya Idowu Bimpe for Shomolu in Lagos; Aliyu Biriskillia Beauty for Akwanga/Nassarawa Eggon/Wamba in Nasarawa; Musa Hauwa for Bosso/Paikoro in Niger; Okuboyejo Rasheedat Temitayo for Ado-Odo/Ota in Ogun; Alao Elizabeth Folashade for Ibarapa East/Ido in Oyo; and Ewo Prescilia Richard for Abua/Odual/Ahoada East in Rivers.
The party’s female senatorial candidates include Oliata Chinenye Edith (Anambra North), Ortom Eunice Edith (Benue North), Nwachi Maria Ude (Ebonyi South), Fatuyi Olajuyigbe Monica Adesola (Ekiti Central), Ayenioye Olabisi (Ekiti South), Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan (Kogi Central) and Iyabo Obasanjo (Ogun Central).
Other political parties fielding candidates for House of Representatives seats include the NNPP, ADP, NRM, PRP, ZLP, SDP, APP, AA, Accord, DLA, LP, APGA, APM, NDP, AAC, BP and YPP.
For the Senate, parties with candidates include ZLP, APP, ADP, AAC, DLA, Accord, APGA, NNPP, NRM, APM, LP, YPP, NDP, SDP, AA and YP.
The list also includes a visually impaired candidate and a candidate with albinism contesting House of Representatives seats.
