Nigeria, Saudi Arabia Move to Deepen Defence Ties

Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation following a courtesy visit by the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, to the Defence Headquarters.

The visit, which took place on Wednesday, provided an opportunity for both countries to explore additional areas of military cooperation and reinforce existing ties between their armed forces.

Receiving the Ambassador, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa Oluyede, welcomed the visit and stressed the importance Nigeria attaches to its relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Oluyede said there was a need to sustain and expand existing channels of military cooperation, particularly in areas capable of strengthening the professional capacity and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s continued goodwill towards Nigeria and expressed optimism that the discussions would result in tangible areas of cooperation.

In his remarks, Ambassador Al-Balawi described Nigeria as an important partner in Africa and expressed the Kingdom’s readiness to deepen relations with Nigeria, particularly in the defence and security sectors.

He emphasised the importance of closer engagement between the armed forces of both countries, noting that stronger institutional and professional links would contribute to enhanced collaboration in tackling common security challenges.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest, with emphasis on strengthening military-to-military relations and promoting peace, security and stability.

The visit further underscored the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia and the shared resolve to broaden defence cooperation in pursuit of mutual strategic interests.
