Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the deadly attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area, which claimed several lives, including four police officers.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, and made available to journalists on Friday, the governor described the attack as “despicable” and a grave threat to the peace and security of the state.
Alia said the killing of the four law enforcement officers was particularly painful, noting that their deaths underscored the sacrifices security personnel make in the line of duty.
“This despicable act is an attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo and a grave threat to the security and stability of Benue State.
“The reported killing of four law enforcement officers is particularly painful and underscores the enormous sacrifices being made by security personnel in the line of duty,” he said.
The governor described the incident as a disturbing reminder of the persistent insecurity and recurring attacks on vulnerable communities and security personnel in the area.
He extended his condolences to the people of Ayilamo, the families of the victims and the entire Logo community.
“I extend heartfelt condolences to the people of Ayilamo, the families of all the victims, and the entire Logo Local Government community. We mourn with you and assure you that you are not alone in this difficult period,” Alia said.
He also commiserated with the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, over the loss of the four officers.
According to him, the fallen officers demonstrated courage and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
“We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Alia commended the Department of State Services, particularly its personnel in Benue and Nasarawa states, for what he described as a prompt and professional operation that resulted in the arrest of three suspects allegedly linked to the attack.
He said the arrests represented a significant step towards uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice.
The governor urged the DSS to intensify its investigation and exploit all information obtained from the suspects to identify other persons connected to the attack.
“We urge the DSS to intensify its investigation and make the best use of the information obtained from the suspects in its custody.
“Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators, and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law,” he said.
Alia further assured residents that his administration would continue to work with security agencies to strengthen security in Ayilamo, Logo and other vulnerable communities across Benue.
He said the government remained committed to preventing further attacks, protecting lives and property, restoring peace and providing necessary support to affected communities.
The governor appealed to residents of Ayilamo and neighbouring communities to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while urging them to provide credible and timely information to security agencies.
He also cautioned residents against actions capable of escalating tensions or undermining the ongoing investigation.
Alia assured the people of Ayilamo and the entire state that his administration would not abandon them, stressing that the government remained determined to protect lives and property, uphold justice and restore lasting peace across Benue State.
