President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday flagged off construction of the 125-kilometre Akwanga-Jos section of the Akwanga-Maiduguri Superhighway and commissioned the dualized Akwanga Township Road and underpass executed by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Tinubu was represented at the ceremony in Akwanga by APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda. In attendance were Works Minister David Umahi, Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Gombe Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, federal lawmakers, state officials and traditional rulers.
Governor Sule described the Akwanga township road as a signature project of his administration, completed without borrowing. He credited President Tinubu’s economic reforms for freeing up state resources to fund it. He added that all residents and business owners affected by the road were fully compensated, which secured community support.
President Tinubu commended Sule for delivering major infrastructure in a local government area, saying it shows commitment to good governance. He said the project reflects state-federal collaboration and will link Abuja to Akwanga and Makurdi to Akwanga via an interchange. He also directed the Works Minister, state governors and the Surveyor General to prepare a setback plan for future expansion, and urged contractors to train and hire local youths.
Works Minister David Umahi said the Akwanga-Jos road is Section One, Phase One of the 700-kilometre Akwanga-Kaduna-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Superhighway under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Legacy Road Projects. The 125km section cuts across Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau states.
Umahi said work has started on the Gombe-Biu section, while Jos-Bauchi, Bauchi-Gombe and Biu-Maiduguri segments are being designed for procurement. He disclosed that Tinubu approved the immediate release of ₦111 billion for the Akwanga-Jos section.
Umahi gave updates on other legacy projects: Section One of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is substantially completed, with work ongoing in Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Sections of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway in Sokoto, Kebbi and Oyo are progressing, as is the Trans-Saharan route linking Calabar, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi and the FCT. He noted that the North Central has 35 major federal road projects, five already completed.
Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, Nasarawa APC 2027 governorship hopeful, praised Umahi’s performance and Sule’s transparency, urging Nigerians to give Tinubu another term to consolidate gains. Information Minister Mohammed Idris cited road infrastructure, the National Education Loan Fund, and Nigeria’s exit from the FATF grey list as reasons Tinubu deserves a second term.
