SGF Recounts June 12 Lessons, Stresses Democratic Values

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation has reflected on the significance of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, describing it as a defining moment that shaped Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Speaking on the anniversary, the SGF noted that the annulled poll remains a painful reminder of the cost of subverting the people’s will. He said the events of June 12 forced Nigerians to confront the consequences of electoral injustice and ultimately strengthened the resolve to build a democratic culture anchored on fairness and inclusion.

According to him, the sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists during that period laid the foundation for the return to civil rule in 1999. He stressed that their courage continues to inspire efforts to protect electoral integrity and uphold citizens’ rights.

The SGF urged Nigerians, especially political leaders, to draw lessons from June 12 by prioritizing national unity, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring that every vote counts. He added that democracy can only thrive when institutions remain strong, independent, and responsive to the people.

He concluded by calling for collective commitment to deepen democratic practices, saying the memory of June 12 should serve as a constant reminder that the will of the people must never be compromised.
