Dr. Yakubu Adamu, PhD, has been affirmed as the 2027 governorship candidate of the ruling Allied People’s Movement (APM), in Bauchi State, positioning the former Finance Commissioner as the party’s standard bearer for the next General Elections.
Born on 12 August 1980 in Gwabba, Bauchi metropolis, Dr. Adamu hails from Gulbun, Doguwa Ward, Giade Local Government Area. He grew up between Gwabba, Ilelah where he started primary school, and Karofin Madaki where he later lived. He holds the traditional titles of Wazirin Giade and Sardaunan Gulbun.
From Kofar Fada to PhD
His academic journey began at Kofar Fada Primary School, 1986-1992, followed by Pilot Junior Secondary School, 1992-1995, and Government Science Secondary School, Toro, 1995-1998. He did an Advanced Level Programme at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, 1999-2001, before gaining admission into Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi.
At ATBU he earned a B.Tech in Business Management in 2006 and an MBA in 2013. He later obtained an MSc in Finance, Investment and Banking from the International University of Bamenda, Cameroon, 2014-2016, and completed a PhD in Management from the same institution in 2020. His research focuses on finance and economic development.
Banking career before politics
Dr. Adamu began his professional career at First City Monument Bank, FCMB, in 2008 as a Marketing Officer, serving until 2012. He joined Skye Bank Plc as Head of Branch Retail, 2012-2015, and later Business Development Manager, 2015-2019.
In 2013 he moved to Polaris Bank, where he rose to Business Development Manager and served as Team Lead, Public Sector, Northeast, 2019-2021. His last role at Polaris was Team Lead, Public Sector Northeast and Business Development Manager, Bauchi, before resigning in 2023 to take public office.
He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Chartered Institute of Economics, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management.
Political Debut as Finance Commissioner
His formal entry into politics came in 2023 when Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed appointed him Commissioner for Bauchi State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. Though new to office, he had already been active in the governor’s re-election campaign.
During his tenure from 2023 to April 2026, Dr. Adamu was described as a driving force in implementing the “My Project 1 & 2” initiatives aimed at state development. He resigned in April 2026 to pursue his governorship ambition.
APM said his background in banking, public finance and economic policy gives him managerial depth as he seeks the state’s top seat.
Personal life
Dr. Adamu is married with children. His hobbies include football, reading and research.
