Open Twitter or any WhatsApp group on election day in Nigeria and you’ll see the same scene: people at home, sleeping, or playing street football.
They call it a protest. Let’s call it what it is — handing victory to the politicians they say are ruining their lives.
Picture the unit in your neighborhood. 500 names on the register.
Election day comes. Only 50 people show up. What happens to the other 450 ballot papers? They sit there. Unguarded. That’s exactly what riggers pray for.
You’ve given a corrupt official and a few paid thugs an empty room, zero witnesses, and 450 blank sheets. They have all afternoon to thumbprint in secret, stuff the boxes, and write any fake number they want.
Your absence supplies the paperwork for their lie.Imagine 85% of those 500 registered voters wake up and show up. That’s 425 neighbors packed into that school yard or street corner from morning until count.
The game changes instantly. How does a thug snatch a box with hundreds of eyes on him? How does a crooked official slip in a fake result sheet when every paper is accounted for by a real person in the queue?
When the community turns out, rigging becomes a physical and mathematical impossibility.
No leftover papers to steal. No empty space to manufacture a lie. Your physical presence builds a wall of transparency that paralyzes riggers.
Bad actors spend all year telling you your vote doesn’t matter. They want you home so they can slide back into power.
But ask yourself: if voting is useless, why do they spend billions buying PVCs, or hire boys to scare you from the booths? They know the power of your finger, even if you’ve forgotten it.
Stop hiding behind online complaints and cynical jokes. True electoral reform doesn’t start in an Abuja courtroom. It starts in the queue.
On election day the formula is simple: Wake up early. Get to your unit. Do your accreditation. Cast your ballot. Stay until the final count is announced, pasted, and recorded.
When we show up en masse, we take back custody of our democracy. We protect our neighborhoods. We make it impossible for them to rig.
