NUJ Hails Oyekunle’s N10m ECOWAS Court Win as ‘Major Victory for Press Freedom’

For the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the N10 million awarded to Jide Oyekunle at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice is more than compensation for one reporter. It is a line in the sand.

The NUJ on Wednesday described Oyekunle’s victory against the Nigerian government as “a major victory for journalism and press freedom in Nigeria,” saying the ruling marks “an important step towards protecting journalists and defending media freedom.”

Oyekunle, a journalist with _Independent Newspaper_, had sued over the violation of his rights. The ECOWAS Court found in his favor and awarded N10 million in damages against the Nigerian government.

In a statement signed by National Secretary Achike Chude, the union said the judgment is a reminder of the need to protect journalists who “perform their constitutional duty of informing the public.”

“Attacks and harassment against media practitioners must not go unchecked,” the NUJ said.

The union commended Avocats Sans Frontières France for providing legal support to Oyekunle and “standing with the journalist throughout the legal process.”

The NUJ urged the Federal Government to comply with the judgment “without delay” and pay the N10 million damages awarded.

According to the union, prompt compliance would “demonstrate respect for the rule of law and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to upholding human rights and press freedom.”

Beyond this case, the NUJ called for “stronger measures to guarantee the safety and independence of journalists across the country.”

For Oyekunle, the ruling ends a legal battle. For the NUJ, it opens another: ensuring the judgment is honored, and that the precedent it sets shields the next reporter who faces pressure for doing the job.
