One Dead, Eight Injured in Amman Stampede During Jordan’s World Cup Viewing

Celebration turned to tragedy in Jordan’s capital early Tuesday after a stampede at a public World Cup screening left one fan dead and eight others injured.

The incident occurred at Hashemite Square, a central gathering spot in Amman, where thousands had packed in to watch Jordan’s crucial Group J match against Algeria on giant screens. According to the Public Security Directorate, PSD, heavy congestion and sudden crowd movement triggered a crush that caused multiple casualties.

Emergency crews rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. One victim later died from injuries sustained in the stampede. The PSD said the other eight suffered minor to moderate injuries and were receiving treatment.

Jordanian authorities have opened an investigation. Forensic experts will determine the cause of death while security agencies review the sequence of events. The PSD has not yet said whether overcrowding, poor crowd control, or other factors were to blame.
