Nigeria has produced five cardinals since 1976, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the global Catholic Church.

The first Nigerian and the first indigenous West African to be elevated to the College of Cardinals was Dominic Ignatius Ekandem.
A native of present-day Akwa Ibom State, Ekandem was ordained a priest in 1947 and became the first Bishop of Ikot Ekpene before being created cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1976 at the age of 59.

Nigeria’s second cardinal, Francis Arinze, was elevated by Pope John Paul II in May 1985. Born in Anambra State and ordained in 1958, Arinze served in several senior Vatican positions, including Prefect of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

In October 2003, former Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, became the country’s third cardinal following his appointment by Pope John Paul II. Okogie, who has roots in Edo State and Lagos, was widely recognised for his outspoken leadership of the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

The fourth Nigerian cardinal, John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, was created by Pope Benedict XVI on November 24, 2012. A native of Kabba in Kogi State, Onaiyekan served as Archbishop of Abuja from 1994 until his retirement in 2019.

The latest addition to Nigeria’s College of Cardinals is Peter Ebere Okpaleke, Bishop of Ekwulobia in Anambra State. Pope Francis announced his elevation on May 29, 2022, and he was formally created cardinal during the consistory of August 27, 2022.

As of 2026, Cardinal Okpaleke is the only Nigerian cardinal below the age of 80, making him the country’s sole eligible cardinal-elector who can participate in a papal conclave to elect a new pope. Cardinals Arinze, Okogie and Onaiyekan have all exceeded the age limit for voting.

Anambra State remains the only state in Nigeria to have produced two cardinals—Francis Arinze and Peter Ebere Okpaleke—highlighting its unique place in the history of the Catholic Church in the country.
