Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over is the foundation, not the finish line, the government says combining DSO with 90,000km of fiber and two new satellites will shift the country “from scarcity to abundance” and create the backbone for a $1 trillion economy.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Communications Satellites Limited (NIGCOMSAT), Jane Egerton-Idehen told stakeholders Wednesday at the National Launch of the Digital Switch Over Project in Abuja that the move from analogue to digital TV is a strategic infrastructure investment.

“This switch is not merely a broadcasting upgrade. For us, it’s a nation building initiative. It’s about delivering the Nigerian promise and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” she said.

Egerton-Idehen said analogue TV served Nigeria for decades, but “the demands of the digital age require much more.” The transition means analogue to digital, scarcity to abundance, restricted access to expanded opportunities.

She said DSO goes “beyond the 600 million naira opportunity” and will deliver broadcast services to over 40 million homes while creating jobs across broadcasting and the wider tech ecosystem.

“The switch creates opportunities beyond television, beyond content creators, broadcasters, technical providers, and investors. It’s a platform for young people whose creativity deserves a larger stage,” she stated.

NIGCOMSAT’s role, she added, is to ensure “geography does not determine opportunity.” Through satellite infrastructure, the company is bridging connectivity gaps where terrestrial networks fall short. Example impacts: rural students accessing lessons, filmmakers reaching wider audiences, broadcasters delivering HD services, families getting better viewing.

She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving two new satellites and praised the Ministers of Information and Communications for driving implementation.

“We are switching television signals. We are switching to innovation, inclusion, economic opportunities, digital empowerment, and together we are switching into a brighter future for Nigeria,” Egerton-Idehen said.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani while making his Keynote address explained that the DSO launch is “just a glimpse of what’s to come” under President Tinubu.

For ordinary Nigerians, he said, it means “clear access to information, broader educational and cultural content, improved quality of service, and no one left behind because of where they live.”

Tijani revealed the full infrastructure plan lies on Digital broadcasting to replace analogue nationwide, 90,000km open-access fiber Nationwide optic cable to connect communities, businesses, schools, hospitals, and government services.

He stressed that 2 new satellite got presidential approval secured to strengthen Nigeria’s sovereign communications capacity.

Nigeria is already the only West African country with its own satellite. With fiber covering every part of the country, Tijani said Nigeria can export broadcasting and digital services to neighbors.

“If we combine fiber and satellites, Nigeria will build something truly transformative,” he said. “Infrastructure doesn’t just move signals. It amplifies culture, ideas, and influence.”

With Nigeria leading Africa in music, film, fashion, and digital innovation, he said the new backbone will give creators and entrepreneurs reach across West Africa. Future opportunities in AI, education, healthcare, finance, and government services will all depend on these foundations.

“What you’re seeing today is just a glimpse. Every kilometer of fiber, every satellite we launch, every platform we build takes us closer to a more connected, inclusive, prosperous Nigeria,” Tijani added.

On his part, the Director General of Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu described DSO as more than a broadcast platform. “We are launching a new national communications architecture. We are opening a new chapter in Nigeria’s digital transformation, he said

The DG called it “the big picture”: a Nigeria where every citizen, regardless of location or income, has equal access to HD TV, trusted information, education, culture, and digital opportunities.

Ebuebu said the switch means moving “from analogue to digital, scarcity to abundance, restricted access to expanded opportunities.” The goal is to democratize information, unlock opportunities for creators, stimulate investment, empower set-top box manufacturers, expand consumer choice, improve spectrum efficiency, and position Nigeria as Africa’s leading digital broadcast system.

“The future of broadcasting needs a village,” he stressed. Government alone cannot build it. It requires policymakers, regulators, investors, broadcasters, manufacturers, creators, tech partners, and citizens.

Quoting Thomas Edison, he said: “The value of an idea lies in the using of it. Today Nigeria moves beyond ideas. Today we move into implementation, into delivery, into the future.”

Ebuebu thanked President Tinubu, the Ministers of Information and Communications, NIGCOMSAT, and all stakeholders for making the launch possible.

The event included technical demonstrations of the free TV platform.
