Tegbe Takes Charge at Power Ministry, Vows “One Team, One Mandate” to Fix Nigeria’s Electricity

New Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, resumed office with a clear message for the sector: fix the governance, fix the power.

At his first meeting with CEOs and heads of agencies under the Federal Ministry of Power, Tegbe said collaboration and accountability will define his tenure. The meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on June 9, 2026.

“Technical issues account for only a fraction of our challenges. The larger challenge is governance,” Tegbe told the gathering. “No agency, no department, no unit can solve this sector’s problems alone.”

He urged all players to work as “one team with one mandate,” stressing open communication and shared intelligence as tools to break decades of coordination gaps in the value chain.

*Tinubu’s targets remain the guide*
The minister said President Bola Tinubu’s administration has set 4 non-negotiables for the sector: increase generation capacity, expand transmission capacity, fix sector liquidity, and scale up renewable energy investment.

Progress has been made in the last 3 years, he admitted, but targets are still being missed. “We have made considerable progress, but we are not yet where we want to be because we have not met the targets set for us,” he said. “By approaching things differently, we can achieve and even surpass those targets.”

*TCN gets early commendation*
Tegbe singled out the Transmission Company of Nigeria for quick action after a recent feeder outage. He said he ordered repairs within 12 hours, and TCN restored supply by 5:20 p.m. the same day.

“I am happy with you,” he told TCN. “That night, Mr. President was informed that the problem had been resolved within 12 hours. That’s what commitment and coordination can do.”

*Performance will be rewarded*
To drive results, the minister announced plans for a performance-based incentive framework. The idea: reward agencies and teams that show productivity, innovation, and excellence.

He also promised regular engagement with stakeholders and a transparent approach to tackling the industry’s long-standing problems.

GM, Public Affairs at TCN, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that CEOs of key agencies and parastatals attended the inaugural session.

For Nigerians still battling blackouts and estimated billing, Tegbe’s early focus on governance over just hardware suggests the ministry is looking inward first. Whether “one team” can deliver megawatts faster will be the test in the months ahead.
