Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Cyprus have received a boost following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony, held on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, officially marked the commencement of Ufochukwu’s diplomatic assignment in Cyprus.
During the ceremony, the Nigerian envoy conveyed the goodwill and fraternal greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to President Christodoulides and expressed her commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
The presentation of the credentials formally authorises Ufochukwu to represent Nigeria in Cyprus and serve as an official channel of communication between the governments in Abuja and Nicosia.

In his remarks, President Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian ambassador and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening its longstanding friendship with Nigeria.
He noted that the two countries share historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections, which provide a strong foundation for enhanced diplomatic cooperation.
The Cypriot president also acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
Christodoulides assured that his government was prepared to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, education, economic development and political dialogue.
He further emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing shared challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagements.
The renewed diplomatic engagement presents an opportunity for both countries to expand their cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations and explore practical areas of economic and social development.
For Nigeria, Ufochukwu’s accreditation is expected to strengthen the country’s diplomatic presence in the Mediterranean region while advancing opportunities for trade, investment, educational exchange and the protection of Nigerians living in Cyprus.
The renewed engagement could also provide a platform for Nigerian businesses and professionals to explore opportunities in Cyprus, while encouraging Cypriot investors to consider emerging opportunities in Nigeria.
The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
Ufochukwu is expected to commence engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as part of efforts to translate the diplomatic goodwill into tangible benefits for both countries.
Her presentation of credentials signals the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both sides expressing readiness to strengthen cooperation based on mutual respect, shared interests and longstanding friendship.
