The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has honoured Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, with its prestigious Christian Icon Award in recognition of his commitment to integrity, ethical leadership, public service and Christian values.
The award was presented by CAN President, Most Rev. (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Saturday.
Okoh said the honour recognised distinguished leaders whose contributions to nation-building reflected excellence, integrity and the principles of faith and service.
According to the CAN president, Oborevwori’s contributions to national development, demonstrated through compassion, ethical leadership and dedication to public service, had continued to inspire people across the country.
He added that the award acknowledged the governor’s commitment to Christian principles in governance and his contributions to the Christian community.

Speaking with journalists after receiving the award, Oborevwori expressed gratitude to God, describing the recognition as a call to greater service to humanity. He said the honour was particularly meaningful because it came from CAN, an organisation whose recognition reflects not only public achievements but also character, integrity and positive contributions to society.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to serving God and humanity, stressing that political responsibilities should never undermine one’s faith.
According to him, public office holders must understand the distinction between political engagement and service to God, maintaining that both responsibilities require sincerity, discipline and a strong sense of purpose.
Oborevwori also disclosed that his commitment to ushering work began years before he became Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
He said he continued the practice despite advice at the time to discontinue it because of his political position, adding that his conviction about serving God and humanity had remained a guiding principle throughout his public life.
The governor further commended efforts to unite the five blocs within the Christian community, expressing optimism that their unity and ability to speak with one voice would strengthen Christianity and contribute to national development.
He emphasised that service to God should not be motivated by personal gain or public recognition but by genuine commitment and a sense of responsibility.
Oborevwori attended the ceremony alongside the immediate past governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; and members of the National Assembly, including Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Hon. Nicholas Mutu and Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko.
Also present were the Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon. Johnson Erijo; Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo; and other government officials and political leaders.
The recognition formed part of CAN’s golden jubilee celebration, which brought together Christian leaders, political office holders and other distinguished personalities.
The award further highlighted the association’s commitment to promoting Christian values, responsible leadership and unity among Christians as part of efforts to build a more peaceful and united Nigeria.
