The Nigerian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to building a peaceful, prosperous and respected nation as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Ikpeazu made the call in Madrid while delivering his address at an event organised to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Ambassador congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Nigerians, particularly members of the Nigerian community in Spain, on the national celebration.
He described Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, as a historic milestone that marked the country’s emergence as a free and sovereign nation, saying the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the ideals of freedom, unity, progress and dignity.

According to him, the sacrifices of Nigeria’s nationalists and patriots who fought for independence should continue to inspire citizens to see nation-building as a collective and continuous responsibility.
He noted that Nigeria remains Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies, with significant human capital, cultural diversity and natural resources.
Ikpeazu also highlighted the country’s democratic institutions, youthful population and contributions to peace, security and development across Africa and beyond.
The Ambassador used the occasion to highlight the growing relationship between Nigeria and Spain, describing the bilateral ties as being anchored on mutual respect, dialogue and expanding cooperation.
He identified trade, investment, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges as areas in which both countries have continued to deepen cooperation.
Ikpeazu noted that Spanish companies, including GB Foods, continue to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s expanding market, while Nigerians living in Spain contribute to the country’s social and economic development.
He expressed Nigeria’s desire to further strengthen cooperation with Spain in renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology and the creative industries.
The Ambassador also urged the Nigerian community in Spain, comprising students, professionals and entrepreneurs, to continue serving as positive representatives of the country.
He commended their contributions and encouraged them to remain united, law-abiding and committed to promoting Nigeria’s image through enterprise, innovation and resilience.
‘Reforms aimed at inclusive growth’
On Nigeria’s economic outlook, Ikpeazu said the administration of President Tinubu was pursuing reforms designed to diversify the economy, improve governance and promote inclusive growth.
He acknowledged the economic challenges facing the country but said efforts were being made to create a stronger foundation for sustainable development.
According to him, government is focused on harnessing the energy of Nigeria’s youth, the creativity of its people and the country’s diversity to build a more prosperous and secure future.
He further stressed the importance of international partnerships in achieving the country’s development objectives.
The Ambassador said Nigeria would continue to create opportunities for investment and business-to-business partnerships between Nigerian and Spanish enterprises.
“As we raise a toast to Nigeria at 66, let us renew our pledge to work together for a nation that is peaceful, prosperous, and respected in the comity of nations,” he said.
He concluded by wishing both Nigeria and Spain continued progress and prosperity, declaring: “Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Long live the Kingdom of Spain!”
