Former Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Earl Osaro Onaiwu has warned Nigerians against allowing politics to destroy friendships and family bonds.
Onaiwu, who is also Founder of Red Carpet Protocol, said political affiliation is increasingly tearing people apart, with relatives and long-time friends cutting ties because they support different parties or candidates.
He urged citizens to remember that elections come and go, but relationships last a lifetime.
“We can disagree politically and still remain friends. We can support different candidates and still sit at the same table. Politics is temporary, but family and friendship are relationships we carry with us through life.”
According to him, political participation should be about ideas and choosing leaders, not about creating enemies out of people we grew up with and love.
“Do not lose your brothers, sisters, or friends because of politics. Stand for what you believe in, but never forget the people who were there before politics came into the picture,” he said.
As the country heads into another period of intense political activity, Onaiwu called for tolerance and mutual respect, stressing that the pain from permanently broken relationships often outlives any political season.
