INEC Opens Mega Voter Registration Centre in Abuja Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated a Mega Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Centre in Garki, Abuja, as part of efforts to expand access to voter registration and encourage greater participation in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the inauguration on Monday, the National Commissioner supervising the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Mohammed Haruna, said the Garki facility represents the third and final phase of the ongoing CVR exercise ahead of the 2027 polls.

Haruna explained that the registration exercise was suspended in October 2025 to allow the Commission concentrate on preparations for the February 2026 FCT Area Council election.

He said the two-week mega registration exercise was designed to make voter registration more accessible by reducing congestion at registration centres and ensuring that distance does not prevent eligible Nigerians from registering or updating their voter information.

He urged eligible citizens not to delay their registration, stressing the importance of taking advantage of the extended registration period to participate in electing the country’s leaders.
“We urge all eligible Nigerians not to wait until the last minute. Take advantage of this extended period to register and participate in choosing those who govern,” Haruna said.

The National Commissioner also commended civil society organisations for supporting the Commission’s efforts, particularly YIAGA Africa and the European Union, for their contributions to strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Programme Officer of YIAGA Africa, Yetunde Bakare, said the organisation would intensify voter education and registration campaigns across communities in the FCT to increase the number of registered voters ahead of the elections.

She called on young Nigerians to take advantage of the registration exercise and use their numerical strength to shape the outcome of the 2027 general elections.

Bakare said YIAGA Africa was committed to taking the voter mobilisation campaign to the grassroots to ensure more eligible residents register before the close of the exercise.

The Mega CVR Centre in Garki will operate for two weeks as part of INEC’s nationwide drive to register more eligible voters ahead of the 2027 general election.
