10 NECO Exam Candidates Rescued From ISWAP in Borno by Troops today

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have rescued 10 National Examinations Council candidates and teachers abducted during an ISWAP attack on Lassa Community, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, and targeted Technical Secondary School while students were writing exams.

According to Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, the Theatre Command deployed strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft from the Air Component immediately after receiving the report. Ground troops were also mobilized for a coordinated search and rescue operation.

With air support providing guidance, troops made contact with the terrorists around Daggu. A firefight ensued. Troops outmaneuvered the fleeing attackers, inflicted casualties, and captured seven motorcycles, disrupting their escape.

Ten victims were rescued unhurt and are currently receiving care. Efforts are ongoing to rescue one remaining victim and apprehend the perpetrators.

One soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed in the exchange of fire.

“Regrettably, during the intense firefight, one gallant soldier of OPHK and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force made the supreme sacrifice,” Goni said. “Their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment exemplify the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens.”

Troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations and sustained pressure on the terrorists responsible. Security measures across the area have been reinforced to protect communities and schools and prevent recurrence.

Goni said the incident shows the desperation of terrorist groups under sustained military pressure. “They have resorted to attacking soft targets and vulnerable members of society in a futile attempt to sustain their campaign of terror. However, such cowardly acts will neither deter OPHK’s resolve nor diminish its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks.”

He added that Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to protecting civilians, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and creating a secure environment for education and other essential services.

The military urged the public to remain vigilant, provide timely and credible information to security agencies, and disregard unverified reports. Updates will be issued through official channels.
