Nigeria, Alberta Seal Deal on Gas Monetisation, Methane Cuts

Nigeria and Canada’s Alberta Province have moved to deepen cooperation on natural gas development, with both sides backing joint action on energy transition, emissions cuts, and capacity building.

In a statement issued by Louis Ibah, spokesman for the Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo said the Minister held bilateral talks Tuesday with Alberta’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, Hon. Brian Jean, in Calgary.

Ekpo in the release told his Canadian counterpart that Nigeria is positioning its 215+ trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves as the “cornerstone” of its energy transition plan. He said gas will drive economic growth, strengthen energy security, and support lower-carbon development.

“Nigeria is positioning natural gas as the cornerstone of its energy transition and seeks strong global partnerships to advance cleaner production and emissions reduction,” Ekpo said.
