FCT NUJ Demands Fencing, Security for Schools

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council has urged the Federal Government to fully implement the Safe School Initiative, with emphasis on adequate perimeter fencing and deployment of security personnel to schools nationwide.

This was part of the resolutions in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ FCT Council Congress held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with over 500 members in attendance.

The Congress specifically called on Federal and State Governments to secure educational institutions by installing proper perimeter fencing and posting adequate security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to guard schools against attacks and abductions.

Beyond school safety, the Council also tasked security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property across the country. It further urged the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, to strengthen engagement with journalists operating in Abuja.

The Congress expressed concern over persistent water supply challenges in the FCT, calling on the FCT Administration and the Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, to urgently address the situation.

On professional ethics, members were reminded to report security matters accurately, objectively and responsibly, while prioritizing personal safety in the course of duty. The NUJ National Secretariat was also urged to organize regular workshops to build journalists’ capacity for professional security reporting.

The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to public-interest journalism and the promotion of peace and national development.
