Power Minister-Designate Tegbe Denies Pledge to Fix Electricity in 3 Months

Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he promised to resolve Nigeria’s electricity problems within three months.

In a statement issued Thursday by his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe said the reports misrepresented his comments during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months. This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks,” the statement read.

Tegbe clarified that he did not give a specific deadline for fixing the sector. He told lawmakers that reforms would require consultations, technical assessments, and cooperation from stakeholders.

He explained that while some emergency measures to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, broader reforms covering metering, gas supply, and restoring confidence in the sector could take up to a year to yield noticeable results.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe was quoted as saying.

The minister-designate also outlined plans to upgrade electricity infrastructure, strengthen accountability, and modernise the power system. On tariffs, he assured senators that reforms would protect vulnerable households while balancing sustainability, investor confidence, and efficiency.

Tegbe added that he remains open to media engagement and welcomes requests for clarification to ensure accurate public understanding of the planned reforms.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Tegbe as Minister of Power following a cabinet reshuffle that saw the exit of Adebayo Adelabu from the ministry.
