Court Grants El-Rufai Medical Access as Bail Variation Hearing is Adjourned

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned until Thursday, May 7, 2026, its ruling on a motion seeking a variation of bail conditions for former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

El-Rufai is standing trial alongside Mr. Joel Adoga on a 10-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The charges relate to alleged conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering offences under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, Dr. Agada Akogwu appeared for the prosecution while Oluwole Olaniyan SAN led the defence team in adopting the motion for variation of bail. The prosecution responded with a counter-affidavit opposing the application.

El-Rufai was earlier admitted to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum, while Adoga’s administrative bail was adopted by the court.

During the hearing, defence counsel also made a compassionate plea for the court to allow El-Rufai access to medical treatment for dental and eye care at designated facilities in Abuja.

The court granted the request, directing the ICPC to convey El-Rufai under strict supervision to Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital in Abuja whenever required, and to return him to custody immediately after treatment. The court stressed that all movements must remain under ICPC supervision.

The ICPC said it remains committed to complying with court orders while ensuring lawful custody of the defendant pending the fulfilment of bail conditions.

“The ICPC reiterates its dedication to due process and assures the public that the prosecution of the case is being conducted diligently and in accordance with the law,” the Commission said in a statement signed by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications.
