Tinubu’s Visit: Akwa Ibom Poised for Economic Transformation, Investment Opportunities – Okon

The scheduled visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Akwa Ibom State on Friday, November 6, 2026, has been described as a significant opportunity to accelerate economic growth, attract investments and strengthen the state’s development partnership with the Federal Government.

Chairman and Coordinator of the Arise with Renewed Hope Initiative, Abuja, Comrade Tommy Etim Okon, said the presidential visit goes beyond ceremonial engagements, noting that it presents Akwa Ibom with an opportunity to showcase its developmental strides and position itself as a major destination for investment, tourism, aviation, commerce and industrial development.

Okon, in an analytical statement ahead of the President’s visit, said the occasion would provide an important platform to assess the progress of Governor Umo Eno’s administration, celebrate infrastructure delivery and explore opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

According to him, President Tinubu is expected to commission several landmark projects executed under Governor Eno’s administration, including the International Terminal Building at Victor Attah International Airport, International Airport Hospital, Ibom Aviation Village, Airport-Okopedi Road, Ring Road 3, AKWA-GIS Office Complex, Command and Control Centre and ARISE Palm Resort.

He noted that the projects represent strategic investments in transportation, urban development, public safety, tourism, digital governance and economic diversification.

Okon maintained that the importance of the projects should not be measured solely by their physical structures but by their capacity to stimulate economic activities, create employment, attract investors and improve the living conditions of residents.

Aviation Infrastructure and Economic Opportunities

Highlighting the significance of the new international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport, Okon said the facility could transform the aviation and economic landscape of Akwa Ibom by improving connectivity, facilitating international business travel, promoting tourism and supporting cargo operations.

He added that the accompanying Aviation Village and Airport Hospital would further strengthen the state’s aviation infrastructure by providing accommodation for aviation professionals and improving emergency medical services.

However, he stressed that the success of the facilities would depend on effective management, compliance with international aviation standards, airline partnerships, adequate staffing and sustained investment.

He urged the state government to move beyond infrastructure development and establish a competitive aviation economy capable of attracting international airlines and aviation-related businesses.

Road Projects to Boost Commerce, Rural Development

On road infrastructure, Okon described the Airport-Okopedi Road, which traverses Nsit Atai and Okobo Local Government Areas, and Ring Road 3 as important projects capable of expanding economic opportunities and improving connectivity.

He explained that improved road networks would ease transportation challenges, connect rural communities to urban markets, facilitate the movement of agricultural produce and reduce transportation costs for farmers, traders and business owners.

According to him, Ring Road 3, linking Idoro Road to Ikot Ekpene Road through Uyo and Ibiono Ibom, would also improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and support the expansion of commercial activities.

Tourism Development and Investment Potential
The ARISE Palm Resort, he said, represents another opportunity to unlock Akwa Ibom’s tourism and hospitality potential.

Okon observed that the state possesses considerable tourism assets, including natural attractions, cultural heritage, culinary traditions and hospitality facilities that could attract local and international visitors.

He said the development of modern hospitality infrastructure would create opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, tour guides, artisans, entertainers and small-scale entrepreneurs.

He, however, called for deliberate tourism promotion, private-sector participation and strategic partnerships to transform the sector into a sustainable revenue-generating industry.

Security, Digital Governance and Investor Confidence

On security, Okon described the Command and Control Centre as an important investment in public safety and the creation of a conducive environment for businesses.

He said modern surveillance technology, effective communication systems and coordinated security operations could strengthen crime prevention, emergency response, traffic monitoring and intelligence gathering.

He added that the facility’s effectiveness would depend on professionalism, inter-agency collaboration, operational discipline and regular maintenance.

Similarly, he described the AKWA-GIS Office Complex as a significant step towards modernising land administration and public governance.

According to him, an efficient geographical information system would improve land documentation, reduce property disputes, promote transparency in land transactions and strengthen government revenue generation.

He noted that digital mapping and geospatial technology were essential for effective urban planning, environmental management and infrastructure development.

Tinubu’s Visit to Strengthen Federal-State Partnership

Okon identified stronger cooperation between the Federal Government and Akwa Ibom State as one of the most important benefits of the presidential visit.

He said the engagement should provide an opportunity for the state to seek increased federal attention and support for strategic development projects, particularly the proposed Ibom Deep Seaport, federal road infrastructure, oil and gas investments, industrialisation, agricultural development, electricity supply, youth employment, education and healthcare.
He maintained that the visit should go beyond political goodwill and translate into practical development commitments capable of delivering measurable benefits to the people.

Economic Diversification and Job Creation

The initiative chairman further argued that Akwa Ibom must reduce its dependence on petroleum revenues by exploring opportunities in aviation, tourism, agriculture, maritime services, manufacturing, technology and the creative industry.

He said the newly completed infrastructure projects could provide the foundation for economic diversification by improving the business environment, attracting private investments and creating employment opportunities.

According to him, improved aviation facilities could encourage business travel and cargo operations, while better road networks would support agricultural trade and tourism infrastructure could attract additional investments.

He, however, emphasised the need for deliberate economic policies that would guarantee local participation, skills development and employment opportunities for young people.

“The ultimate test of development is not the number of projects commissioned but the number of lives positively transformed,” he stressed.

Political Significance Ahead of 2027 Elections
On the political implications of the visit, Okon said Akwa Ibom’s strategic position in the South-South geopolitical zone gives the engagement additional significance as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

He noted that the presence of President Tinubu, Governor Umo Eno and other political leaders would provide an opportunity to strengthen political relationships, promote national integration and consolidate engagement between the state and the Federal Government.

He also acknowledged the roles of Governor Eno and Senate President Godswill Akpabio in facilitating constructive political and developmental engagement between Akwa Ibom and the Federal Government.

However, he maintained that political mobilisation must be supported by credible governance, accountability, inclusive development and policies that address the genuine expectations of citizens.

Calls for Greater Attention to Ibom Deep Seaport

Looking beyond the presidential visit, Okon urged the Federal Government and the Akwa Ibom State Government to use the occasion to advance a practical development partnership.

He identified the Ibom Deep Seaport as one of the strategic projects requiring renewed federal attention, describing it as a potential catalyst for maritime trade, industrial development and employment generation across Akwa Ibom and the wider Niger Delta.

He also called for increased investment in agro-processing, manufacturing, petrochemicals, logistics and export-oriented industries.

Other priorities he identified include establishing sustainable partnerships with domestic and international airlines, developing structured youth empowerment programmes, providing adequate infrastructure maintenance and ensuring that rural communities, women, vulnerable groups and small businesses benefit from emerging economic opportunities.

Akwa Ibom People Urged to Embrace Unity and Accountability

Okon called on traditional rulers, political leaders, professionals, organised labour, women, youths, entrepreneurs and community organisations to embrace a common development agenda beyond political differences.

He said the people must recognise that sustainable development requires collective responsibility, institutional accountability and the effective maintenance of public infrastructure.

He added that facilities commissioned during the presidential visit must be managed efficiently to ensure that they continue to serve present and future generations.

Conclusion

Okon described President Tinubu’s visit as an important chapter in Akwa Ibom’s development journey, offering opportunities to showcase the achievements of the Eno administration, strengthen federal-state cooperation, attract private-sector investments and accelerate economic transformation.

He, however, emphasised that the real significance of the visit would be determined by the development outcomes that follow the commissioning ceremonies.

According to him, Akwa Ibom must translate the presidential engagement into stronger strategic partnerships, increased federal investments, employment opportunities and improved living conditions for its people.

“The ultimate measure of leadership is not the applause received at public ceremonies, but the enduring positive impact of governance on the lives of the people,” he stated.

He expressed optimism that the visit would mark another significant step towards unlocking the economic potential of Akwa Ibom State and building a more prosperous, peaceful and economically vibrant society.
