Netanyahu to Remain Caretaker Prime Minister as Israel Election Ends in Deadlock

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to remain in office in a caretaker capacity following the October 27, 2026, parliamentary election, which failed to produce a clear majority for any political bloc.

Preliminary results show that Netanyahu’s political bloc secured approximately 53 seats, while the opposition bloc, led by Gadi Eisenkot, obtained about 48 seats in the 120-member Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset.

Neither bloc has reached the 61-seat threshold required to form a majority government, leaving the country facing political uncertainty.
Arab-led parties are projected to control 19 seats, a development that could give them considerable influence in negotiations over the formation of the next government.

Following the inconclusive outcome, Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to begin consultations with political party leaders as efforts intensify to secure the support needed to establish a new administration.

However, if the ongoing negotiations fail to produce a workable governing coalition, Israel could be forced to hold another parliamentary election.

The stalemate means Netanyahu will continue overseeing government affairs in a caretaker capacity pending the outcome of negotiations and the formation of a new government.
