NNPC assures affected residents of support, says cause of incident remains under investigation
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has confirmed an explosion on a gas pipeline operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, reportedly resulting in injuries and damage to residential buildings and businesses in the affected community.

In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC Limited expressed concern over the incident, extending its sympathies to those affected and their families.

The company said the protection of lives and the prevention of further harm remained its immediate priorities.

According to the statement, NGIC has activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected section of the pipeline to minimise further risks.

It added that the company was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate emergency response efforts and assess the impact of the explosion on residents, property and the environment.

NNPC Limited also disclosed that it was engaging with community leaders to identify the immediate needs of affected residents and coordinate appropriate assistance.

The company noted that investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion and establish the full extent of the damage.

It reaffirmed its commitment to the safe and reliable operation of its facilities, adding that relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement further assured that NNPC Limited would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to establish the facts and determine appropriate corrective measures.

Meanwhile, residents and members of the public have been advised to keep away from the affected area and comply with safety instructions issued by emergency responders and relevant authorities.

NNPC Limited reiterated its commitment to protecting host communities, safeguarding the environment and ensuring the responsible operation of its facilities.

The company promised to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
