ECOWAS Court Elects Liberia’s Brumskine President, Benin’s Aihou Vice-President

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has elected Justice Charlyne M. Brumskine of Liberia as its new President and Justice Désire Henri Aihou of Benin as Vice-President.

The two justices emerged on October 13, 2026, following an election conducted by the newly constituted college of judges, ushering in a new leadership era for the regional judicial institution.

Their election follows the conclusion of the tenure of the Court’s outgoing college of judges.
Brumskine and Aihou will lead the Court’s judicial and institutional affairs as part of their four-year, non-renewable mandates, which will run until 2030.

Other members of the new college of judges are Justice Awa Bah of The Gambia, Justice Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu of Nigeria, and Justice Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo.

The new leadership is expected to provide direction for the Court in the discharge of its judicial responsibilities and the advancement of its institutional mandate within the ECOWAS regional framework.
