Yankari Rebirth: Bauchi Moves to Turn Tourism Asset into Economic Engine

By Matthew Otabe

The Bauchi State Government’s ongoing renewal of the Yankari Game Reserve is being positioned as more than a tourism project, with the initiative offering an opportunity to use public infrastructure to stimulate private investment, create jobs and strengthen the state’s wider economy.

At the heart of the development strategy is the rehabilitation of accommodation facilities within the reserve, which could improve Yankari’s appeal to families, professionals, international tourists and organisations seeking destinations for retreats, conferences and other activities.

The renovated chalets are expected to provide visitors with improved comfort after exploring the reserve, while the introduction of solar power could help provide more reliable electricity and support a tourism model that combines modern hospitality with environmental sustainability.

Accessibility is also considered central to the reserve’s revival. Improved road connections from Bauchi, tourism signage, transport services and visitor information could enhance the journey to Yankari and make the reserve easier to access.

Proposed improvements in air connectivity could further expand the destination’s reach, although infrastructure alone may not be sufficient to attract international tourists. Sustained marketing, professional destination management, security and consistent service standards would also be required.

The development places significant emphasis on continuity and investor confidence. While governments can provide roads, facilities, funding and institutions, tourism development requires policies and standards that endure beyond individual administrations.

Investors, visitors and local communities would need confidence that the benefits of tourism development will be sustained over the long term, while conservation efforts must remain central to the management of the reserve.

Yankari could also serve as the anchor for a broader tourism corridor in Bauchi State, linking wildlife and biodiversity with history, culture, hospitality and conference tourism.

Such a strategy could broaden the state’s economic narrative beyond agriculture, commerce and public administration, while demonstrating the potential of tourism and conservation as complementary drivers of development.

The reserve already possesses major natural attractions, including its wildlife, forests, hills and the warm waters of the Wikki Spring. The challenge, therefore, is less about creating attractions and more about protecting, managing, connecting and marketing what already exists.

The success of the renewal programme could ultimately be measured by its impact beyond renovated infrastructure.

Key indicators would include increased visitor numbers, private-sector investment, expansion of local businesses, employment opportunities, community benefits and the continued protection of Yankari’s natural environment.
The initiative therefore presents an opportunity for Bauchi to demonstrate how a natural asset can become an engine of economic activity without compromising the ecological character that makes it valuable.

For the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed, the long-term significance of the project will depend on whether the current investment translates into a sustainable tourism economy capable of attracting visitors and investors while supporting communities around the reserve.

With improved roads, renewed accommodation, renewable energy possibilities and renewed government attention, Yankari is being positioned to reconnect its natural inheritance with Bauchi State’s broader economic ambitions.

The wider vision is to make Yankari not merely a destination to visit, but a platform for jobs, investment, conservation and greater visibility for Bauchi and northern Nigeria.
