The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in both the FCT and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said his continued stay in the Federal Executive Council would be tied to his ability to secure electoral support for Tinubu in the two territories, describing the FCT as his place of work and Rivers as his home state.
“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
He added: “If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here. If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister.”
Wike also called on other political appointees to accept responsibility for electoral outcomes in their respective areas of influence.
On his political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections, the minister disclosed that a multi-party alliance, which he referred to as the Rainbow Coalition, was being consolidated across the FCT.
He declared support for Tinubu’s presidential bid and endorsed candidates for legislative positions, including former FCT Senator Philip Aduda, while urging members of different political parties to work together under the coalition.
Wike said the coalition was intended to mobilise voters across the FCT and deliver the candidates it supports in the 2027 elections.
The minister’s declaration came during a meeting that also focused on the planned relocation of mechanics and traders operating in the Apo area to the Wasa informal sector.
He assured the traders that arrangements were underway for their relocation by the end of the year, with physical enumeration of beneficiaries also being carried out.
