The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed as false and unfounded a viral video alleging that Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been breached.
NIMC, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the video was a recycled report originally circulated in 2024 and subsequently debunked by the Commission.
The Commission categorically stated that the National Identity Database (NIDB) had not been breached or compromised at any time.
According to NIMC, it operates a robust, multi-layered security infrastructure designed to protect the personal information of registered citizens and legal residents in line with international best practices.
The Commission expressed concern over the circulation of unverified information, noting that such claims could mislead members of the public and create unnecessary panic.
NIMC therefore urged Nigerians to disregard the contents of the viral video and rely only on information obtained through its official communication channels for updates concerning the National Identity Management System.
The Commission also highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication (NINAuth), describing it as a suite of web, API and mobile verification services designed to strengthen data security, enhance privacy and simplify access to government services.
NIMC said NINAuth provides an official channel for integrating with its backend infrastructure while adding an additional layer of protection and giving individuals greater control over their personal information.
It explained that NINAuth requires the explicit consent of the NIN holder before personal data can be shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes or other verification purposes.
The system, according to the Commission, enables individuals to securely verify their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or other personal information.
NIMC said the initiative is in line with the provisions of the recently enacted NIMC Act, 2026, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), 2023, which require the fair, lawful and transparent handling of personal data.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, adding that it would continue to work with security agencies and other relevant institutions to strengthen its systems and combat misinformation.
