Nigeria’s foreign exchange market has recorded increased activity in recent weeks as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intensifies efforts to boost liquidity and stabilise the naira.

The official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) has been trading around the ₦1,325–₦1,330 per dollar range, prompting market participants and analysts to assess the implications of the currency’s recent performance for businesses, consumers and the wider economy.

Data from the CBN and developments in the NFEM indicate a sustained improvement in the naira’s value, with stronger external reserves and targeted liquidity interventions emerging as key factors supporting the trend.

A major driver of the recent shift has been the CBN’s continued intervention in the foreign exchange market through increased dollar supply.

The apex bank’s interventions, involving substantial dollar injections into the official market, have helped ease immediate demand pressures from importers, manufacturers and corporate entities requiring foreign exchange for legitimate transactions.

The improved liquidity has also contributed to a narrowing of the gap between the official NFEM rate and rates in the parallel market.

The reduced spread is seen as an indication of improving confidence in formal foreign exchange channels and could encourage more businesses and individuals to conduct transactions through the banking system.

Remittances, exports support naira
Steady inflows from Nigerians in the diaspora and earnings from oil exports have also continued to provide important support for the foreign exchange market.

Higher foreign exchange inflows strengthen the country’s ability to meet demand while providing a buffer against excessive currency volatility.

Analysts, however, note that maintaining the naira’s recent gains will require consistent foreign exchange inflows alongside measures to strengthen domestic production and expand non-oil exports.

Impact on businesses, consumers
The relative stability of the exchange rate could provide some relief to businesses dependent on imported raw materials, equipment and other inputs.

A more predictable exchange rate allows companies to plan their foreign exchange requirements and production costs with greater certainty, although the impact on consumer prices may take time to filter through to the retail market.

For Nigerians paying international school fees or financing overseas travel, greater stability in the official market could also reduce exposure to sharp fluctuations in unofficial exchange rates.

The recent improvement in the foreign exchange market may also have implications for investor sentiment.

Foreign portfolio and direct investors typically consider exchange-rate stability, liquidity and the transparency of monetary policy when making investment decisions.

A more predictable foreign exchange environment could therefore support longer-term economic planning and improve confidence among investors and businesses operating in Nigeria.

Despite the naira’s recent relative stability, economists and market observers stress that sustained improvement will depend on more than CBN interventions alone.

Increased domestic production, stronger non-oil exports, continued diaspora remittances through official channels and improved foreign exchange supply will remain critical to maintaining stability.

The management of domestic inflationary pressures will also be important, as rising prices could erode some of the benefits associated with a stronger currency.

As the year progresses, attention will increasingly focus on whether the CBN can sustain adequate liquidity in the official market and consolidate the recent gains without placing undue pressure on the country’s external reserves.

For now, the naira’s movement within the ₦1,325–₦1,330/$ range represents a marked improvement in stability compared with the more volatile conditions witnessed in previous periods, but the durability of the trend will ultimately depend on the strength and consistency of Nigeria’s underlying foreign exchange earnings.
