Tinubu Calls for Overhaul of Global Governance, Financial Institutions at BRICS Summit

Nigeria has called for an urgent overhaul of global governance structures and international financial institutions to make them more representative, equitable and responsive to the realities of the contemporary world.

The call was made on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ongoing 2026 BRICS Summit, where Nigeria reiterated its support for reforms that would give greater voice to emerging economies and the Global South.

Represented by the Vice President Kassim Shettima, the President stressed that existing global institutions must reflect current economic and demographic realities, noting that BRICS provides an important platform for amplifying the voice of the Global South and advancing a more inclusive international order.

Nigeria also used the summit to invite foreign investors to explore the country’s vast investment opportunities and position the nation as a gateway to Africa’s growing consumer and investment market.

The delegation highlighted Nigeria’s strategic position within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), urging investors to leverage the country’s market potential and access to the wider African market.

The address reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting a global system that is more inclusive, representative and responsive to the interests of developing economies.
