El-Rufai Threatens Legal Action Against Defence Minister Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has threatened legal action against the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), over comments he allegedly made about him during a recent television interview.

El-Rufai’s legal representatives, Chambers of Ubong Akpan, issued a formal letter of claim dated September 7, 2026, demanding that the minister retract the alleged defamatory statements, tender an unreserved apology and preserve all records relating to the broadcast.

The letter followed comments allegedly made by Musa during a television programme aired on September 3, where issues concerning banditry, killings, ransom payments, demolitions and El-Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State were reportedly discussed.

The former governor’s lawyers described the remarks as defamatory, arguing that the statements had the potential to damage El-Rufai’s reputation.

According to the legal team, the continued availability of the programme on television and online platforms means the alleged remarks remain accessible to members of the public.

The lawyers have given Musa and his representatives 24 hours to acknowledge receipt of the letter and seven days to provide a substantive response to the demands.

They warned that failure to retract the statements and issue the demanded apology could result in further legal proceedings against the minister.

El-Rufai, through his legal team, also reserved his right to pursue all available legal remedies should the matter not be resolved within the stipulated period.

The development comes amid increasing public exchanges among political figures and government officials over security, governance and events in Kaduna State.
