Uber Ends Ride-Hailing Operations in Nigeria

Uber has announced plans to discontinue its ride-hailing services in Nigeria, with operations scheduled to end on September 2, 2026.

The company disclosed the decision in a message sent to drivers yesterday informing them that they would no longer receive passenger trip requests through the Uber app once the shutdown takes effect.

“ We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026,” the company said.

It added that drivers would no longer be able to receive requests for trips through the platform from the stated date.

Uber described the decision as difficult and expressed appreciation to drivers who had supported its operations since the company launched in Nigeria.

“We know this is heavy news, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our journey in Nigeria,” it said.

The company also commended its drivers for helping commuters navigate Nigerian cities and providing an alternative to conventional transportation services.

“For years, your commitment to your riders has kept this city moving safely and affordably,” Uber said.

According to the company, its technology had helped transform transportation in Nigeria by connecting passengers with independent drivers through its digital platform.

“We are so proud of what the platform has been able to achieve in Nigeria, serving as the technology bridge between riders and your independent services,” it added.

However, Uber did not disclose the reason for its decision to withdraw from the Nigerian market in the message to drivers.

The company said its Help Centre would remain operational until September 24, 2026, to provide assistance and respond to questions from drivers regarding the closure.

The exit is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry, particularly in major cities where app-based transportation has become an important part of urban mobility.

Uber concluded its message by thanking drivers for their contributions to the platform and its operations in Nigeria.
