Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over an unauthorised credit alert into one of his private bank accounts, warning that it points to a wider risk to Nigerians’ financial data.
In a statement on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said an unknown individual made a deposit into his private account with the description: _“Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”_
According to the statement, neither Atiku nor his campaign team authorised or had any knowledge of the transaction or the sender.
“Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorised payment,” Shaibu stated.
Atiku noted that the account in question is strictly private and not in the public domain.
“The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?” the statement queried.
He warned that if the banking details of a former vice president and presidential candidate could be accessed without permission, then ordinary Nigerians are even more vulnerable.
The ADC candidate further expressed concern that the information may have come from persons with authorised access to sensitive financial records, calling it “a serious abuse of trust.”
The statement added that any confirmed breach of banking information could expose account holders to crimes such as kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, and financial fraud.
Atiku said security agencies have been notified and urged them to investigate the incident, which he linked to “a series of suspicious activities” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also called on Nigerians not to be distracted by what he described as attempts to tarnish his reputation as political activities pick up.
The former vice president reaffirmed that he remains focused on his presidential ambition and his commitment to offering “credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.”
