Senate Applauds Customs as Revenue Hits ₦7.3tn, Pledges Stronger Backing for Reforms

The Senate Committee on Customs has praised the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for surpassing its 2025 revenue target, generating ₦7.3 trillion against a projected ₦6.5 trillion, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting ongoing reforms and modernisation efforts.

The commendation came on Wednesday during a retreat for the Senate Committee on Customs in Abuja, themed “Legislative Oversight in the Context of NCS Modernisation and Reforms.”

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Jibrin Isah, described the performance of the Service under the leadership of Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, as remarkable, citing significant gains in revenue collection, trade facilitation and anti-smuggling operations.

“We must commend the Nigeria Customs Service under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for surpassing its revenue target in 2025. There has been a quantum leap in revenue generation, improved trade facilitation and robust anti-smuggling activities,” Isah said.

He thanked the Comptroller-General, management and personnel of the Service for what he described as an outstanding achievement, urging them to sustain the momentum by tackling operational challenges and delivering even stronger results in 2026.

The senator assured the Service of the National Assembly’s continued legislative support, saying any reforms requiring legal backing would receive the necessary attention.

“Where you require legislative backing, please do not hesitate to call on us. At the end of this retreat, my colleagues will be better ambassadors of the Nigeria Customs Service,” he stated.

Isah also congratulated Adeniyi on his re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, describing the feat as a source of national pride and evidence of Nigeria’s growing prominence in global customs administration.

In his keynote address, Adeniyi stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the legislature and the Nigeria Customs Service beyond routine oversight engagements, noting that deeper understanding and partnership would help sustain the agency’s reform agenda and improve its overall performance.
