President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with personnel across all ranks set to receive pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent from September 1, 2026.
The salary review, announced in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel nationwide.
Under the new remuneration structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The new salary package will raise the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for military personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review underscores his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to prioritise troop welfare while strengthening the Armed Forces through the acquisition of modern weapons, equipment and advanced technological capabilities to improve operational effectiveness.
According to the President, national security remains the foundation for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he stated.
President Tinubu urged military personnel to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their patriotism, dedication and service.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.
The salary increase is expected to boost the morale of military personnel and reinforce ongoing efforts to improve the operational readiness and welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
