The office of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship flagbearer in Taraba State, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, has welcomed the executive orders recently signed by Governor Agbu Kefas prohibiting drug abuse, political thuggery and environmental degradation.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the PDP governorship candidate, Joshua Yohanna Nafinji, the office described the objectives of the executive orders as commendable and consistent with the aspirations of law-abiding citizens.
The statement noted that a society free from drug abuse, particularly among young people, political violence and environmental degradation would provide a conducive environment for democracy, security and sustainable development.
It said the office supported the initiatives in principle and commended genuine efforts aimed at protecting the peace and well-being of the people of Taraba State.
However, the statement stressed that the success of the executive orders would depend on their implementation, urging the state government to enforce them with fairness, transparency, consistency and impartiality.
According to the statement, the prohibition of political thuggery should not be used as a tool to suppress legitimate political activities, intimidate opposition supporters or restrict citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of association, expression and peaceful assembly.
It also cautioned against selective enforcement of measures aimed at tackling drug abuse, insisting that anti-drug campaigns should be intelligence-driven, evidence-based and applied equally to all offenders, regardless of political affiliation.
“The law must never become an exercise in ‘do as I say, not as I do.’ Public confidence is built when those entrusted with authority lead by example and willingly subject themselves to the same standards they expect others to uphold,” the statement said.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace, the office called on the Taraba State Government, security agencies and other relevant institutions to ensure that the executive orders strengthen the rule of law rather than undermine democratic competition.
It added that the impartiality of law enforcement would determine whether the measures are remembered as instruments of justice or viewed as tools of political convenience.
The statement also urged PDP supporters across Taraba State to remain peaceful, disciplined and law-abiding, encouraging them to conduct their political activities with civility and respect for democratic values.
It maintained that every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation, deserved equal protection under the law, describing this as the foundation of constitutional democracy, responsible governance and lasting peace.
