The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Jos Archdiocese, has expressed concern over what it described as inappropriate conduct by some graduating students of the University of Jos during their Final Year Brethren (FYB) Week celebrations.
In a statement signed by its President, Paul Pwajok Bot, and dated July 23, 2026, the youth body said photographs circulating on social media showed actions that many faithful and members of the public considered inconsistent with the respect traditionally accorded to Catholic religious attire and symbols.
CYON noted that graduation is an important milestone that should be celebrated with dignity, decency, and respect for the values promoted by educational institutions and society.
According to the organization, while graduates have the right to celebrate their achievements, such celebrations should not undermine the sacredness of religious vocations or portray conduct that could be interpreted as disrespectful to the Catholic priesthood and the Christian faith.
“As a Catholic youth organization committed to the moral, spiritual and social formation of young people, we call on all Catholic youths and students to remember that their actions, especially in public spaces and on social media, have lasting consequences,” the statement said.
The organization urged young Christians to be ambassadors of Christ by demonstrating modesty, responsibility and respect in their conduct.
It also encouraged graduating students across higher institutions to celebrate their academic achievements in ways that inspire younger generations and reflect the values of integrity, humility and mutual respect.
While expressing disappointment over the incident, CYON appealed to members of the public to avoid online harassment, hate speech or personal attacks against those involved.
The organization stressed that correction should be guided by charity, dialogue, forgiveness and reconciliation in line with Christian principles.
CYON reaffirmed its commitment to promoting values that uphold human dignity, respect for religious institutions and responsible youth engagement, expressing hope that the incident would serve as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to moral values that strengthen the faith, families, communities and the nation.
