The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) will host the 2026 Annual Meeting and Workshop of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) Africa Regional Committee (ARC) in Abuja from July 20 to 23, with a focus on strengthening financial system stability through enhanced public awareness and crisis preparedness.
The four-day event, themed “Safeguarding Stability: Public Awareness and Crisis Readiness for a Stronger Future,” will bring together chief executives, directors and senior officials of deposit insurance institutions, financial regulators and other stakeholders from across Africa and beyond.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Communication and Public Affairs Department of the NDIC, Hawwau Gambo, participants will deliberate on strategies to strengthen public awareness and improve crisis preparedness in deposit insurance systems in line with the revised IADI Core Principles.
The workshop is expected to explore measures for sustaining depositor confidence, enhancing communication during periods of financial uncertainty, improving collaboration among financial safety-net institutions, and equipping deposit insurers with practical tools for crisis management and resolution.
It will also provide a platform for peer learning and the exchange of experiences on emerging risks, including financial technology innovations and cyber threats, with the aim of strengthening regional frameworks for effective crisis response.
The programme will feature technical committee meetings, plenary sessions and interactive roundtable discussions on public awareness during normal and crisis periods, crisis preparedness and management, system-wide response operations, and simulation exercises designed to assess institutional readiness.
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, is expected to declare the conference open, while the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, will deliver the keynote address.
Other expected dignitaries include the Secretary General of the International Association of Deposit Insurers, Eva Hüpkes, the Chairperson of the IADI Africa Regional Committee, Julia Oyet, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the NDIC, Thompson Oludare Sunday, who will serve as the Chief Host of the conference.
The annual regional meeting is expected to deepen collaboration among African deposit insurers and reinforce efforts to safeguard financial stability through stronger institutional preparedness and effective public engagement
