The 39th Meeting of the ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee, AFC, opened on Saturday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, with a call for stronger accountability and efficiency in the management of Community resources.
The three-day meeting, running from July 12 to 14, brings together representatives of ECOWAS Member States and Community Institutions to deliberate on key issues relating to administration, finance, human resources, budget execution, and institutional performance.
Recommendations from the meeting are expected to enhance the effectiveness of ECOWAS Institutions in driving the Community’s regional integration agenda.
Declaring the meeting open, the Chair of the AFC, Mr. Komba Momoh, reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to working with Member States and ECOWAS Institutions to advance peace, security, and sustainable development in the region.
In her remarks, the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, said the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee offers an opportunity to reflect on the Community’s achievements, challenges, and aspirations for the future.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Internal Services at the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Habibu Yaya Bappah, commended the AFC for its consistent oversight role. He noted that the Committee’s diligence and recommendations have helped position ECOWAS as one of Africa’s best-performing regional economic communities.
The AFC plays a critical role in ECOWAS’ institutional framework. It is mandated to review administrative, financial, and budgetary matters, ensure prudent use of Community resources, and strengthen accountability mechanisms across ECOWAS Institutions.
The outcome of the Freetown meeting is expected to directly contribute to the credibility, effectiveness, and sustainability of ECOWAS interventions across the region.
