Convocation Day Reflection: For Joan Nweke, Education Means Leading, Serving, Impacting

The gowns were bright, the cheers were loud, and the hall was filled with pride at the University of Lagos 56th Convocation. But for Engr. Joan Nweke, FNSE, the ceremony meant more than crossing a stage to collect a master’s degree.

In a chat with.newsmen after the ceremony, the Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers said education must be “impact driven” and go beyond the paper qualification society often celebrates.

“This convocation represents growth for me—intellectually, professionally, and personally,” Nweke said. “It has reinforced my belief in continuous learning and the responsibility that comes with leadership.”

Nweke, who completed her Master’s programme at UNILAG, described the journey as “intense and rewarding.” For her, the day marked not just the end of coursework, but the culmination of personal transformation.

The engineer said the programme deliberately pushed students past theory. “The programme challenged me to think differently, lead more intentionally, and approach complex situations with clarity and confidence. It was a truly transformative experience,” she noted.

According to Nweke, the course placed strong emphasis on leading projects, managing people, and applying knowledge to real-life situations. The goal: equip graduates with practical leadership skills relevant across industries, not just engineering.

“Through collaborative projects and leadership-focused learning, graduates were encouraged to think strategically, work effectively with others, and adapt to dynamic professional environments,” she explained.

She added that the academic experience expanded her knowledge, sharpened her analytical abilities, and strengthened her decision-making capacity.

As family, friends, and faculty joined graduates to celebrate, Nweke said the moment was a reminder of what education should truly be.

“As graduates celebrated alongside family, friends, and faculty members, the occasion stood as a powerful reminder that education is not only about earning a qualification, but about gaining the knowledge, perspective, and confidence to lead, serve, and create impact,” she posited.

For Nweke, the master’s degree is “a celebration of growth, leadership and new beginning.”

The 56th Convocation once again highlighted the University of Lagos’ reputation as an institution committed to developing forward-thinking professionals and leaders prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.

With excitement and pride filling the UNILAG campus, the stories of graduates like Nweke reflected a common thread: perseverance, growth, and commitment to excellence.

In her view, that is the true measure of education. Not the certificate in hand, but the impact the graduate is ready to create.
