The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) was involved in an accident earlier today in Delta State. Three people have been confirmed dead, according to a statement from the Presidency.
In a statement signed by NRC Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Kayode Opeifa on Monday, the corporation said emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the site to manage the situation and assist injured passengers.
“Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement said.
The Presidency confirmed the fatalities and said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the derailment. Support is also being provided to passengers affected by the crash.
“Relevant authorities continue to assess the full circumstances surrounding the incident, while support is being provided to affected passengers,” the statement read.
“The thoughts and prayers of all Nigerians are with the victims and their loved ones.”
The NRC urged the public to rely only on verified information and official updates as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
