Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is reportedly planning a return to the Senate in 2027, with ambitions that extend beyond securing a seat in the Red Chamber.
Uzodimma served two terms as Senator for Imo West Senatorial District between 2011 and 2019 before becoming Governor of Imo State in January 2020, following a Supreme Court judgment that sacked then-Governor Emeka Ihedioha. He is currently in his second and final term as governor.
Sources say the governor intends to contest for a third senatorial term in 2027, but his ultimate goal is to succeed Senator Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate in the 11th Assembly.
However, that ambition may face a procedural hurdle. Reports indicate that the Senate has introduced a new rule stipulating that only members of the current 10th Assembly will be eligible to contest for the Senate Presidency in the 11th Assembly from 2027. If enforced, the rule would effectively bar non-serving members such as Uzodimma from vying for the position.
Political analysts describe the move as a strategic play in the longer game of legislative succession, where permutations and alliances often determine outcomes well ahead of elections.
The development highlights how political actors anticipate and shape contests through institutional rules, rather than relying solely on electoral campaigns.
Uzodimma has not publicly commented on the reported rule or his 2027 plans.
