The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, over the alleged killing of her newborn baby in the Jabi area of Abuja.
The command said the incident was reported on October 4, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., following a distress call about an abandoned baby discovered in a bush in the Jabi area.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, operatives of the Jabi Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene, where they recovered the lifeless body of a male infant with deep injuries to the throat and abdomen.
The baby was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Following the discovery, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered a manhunt for the suspect.
The police said, with the assistance of community members, Yohanna, a native of Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State and a resident of the Daki-Biu/Jabi area, was traced and arrested.
Preliminary investigation, according to the command, revealed that the suspect allegedly gave birth to the baby in her room on October 3, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m., before allegedly inflicting fatal injuries on the newborn with a razor blade.
Police said the suspect admitted to the act, allegedly citing hatred for the baby’s father as her reason.
The Commissioner of Police condemned the incident, describing it as a grave violation of the sanctity of human life, while commending members of the community for their assistance in helping the police apprehend the suspect.
The command said the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
