Nigeria’s security landscape remains one of the most challenging in Africa, with troops confronting insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and separatist violence across multiple fronts. Yet, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has continued to demonstrate resilience through sustained, intelligence-driven operations that are steadily weakening criminal networks and restoring confidence in vulnerable communities.

The military’s operational scorecard for July 2026 offers more than a compilation of battlefield statistics. It tells the story of an evolving counter-insurgency strategy that combines precision strikes, inter-agency collaboration, community engagement and technological support to confront some of the country’s most persistent security threats.

According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, troops neutralised more than 102 terrorists, rescued 393 kidnapped victims, arrested hundreds of criminal suspects and dismantled criminal infrastructure across the country during the month.

These achievements underscore the determination of the Armed Forces to sustain pressure on violent groups while protecting lives and critical national assets.

Crippling Terror Networks in the North-East
The North-East remained a major theatre of operations as troops of Operation HADIN KAI intensified offensives against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists across Adamawa, Borno, Yobe and Bauchi states.

The operations resulted in the neutralisation of 54 terrorists, the arrest of 102 suspects, the rescue of 102 kidnapped victims and the surrender of 57 insurgents and their family members.

One of the most significant breakthroughs was the elimination of Abu Salim al-Barnawi, a senior Boko Haram commander and propaganda chief, during a failed terrorist attack in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

His death represents a strategic victory, as senior commanders often serve as operational planners, recruiters and ideological leaders within terrorist organisations.

Troops also destroyed terrorist camps in Ngala and Gubio Local Government Areas while arresting logistics suppliers, including a foreign fighter from Sudan and an illegal immigrant from Ghana, highlighting the cross-border dimension of the insurgency.

Bringing Relief to Kidnap Victims
Banditry and kidnapping remained major concerns in the North-West, where Operation FANSAN YAMMA sustained aggressive operations across Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and Zamfara states.

Troops neutralised 33 terrorists, arrested 66 suspects and rescued an impressive 191 kidnapped victims. Among those freed were the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, members of his family and dozens of other abductees.

These rescue missions demonstrate the military’s growing emphasis on intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling kidnapping syndicates while ensuring the safe recovery of victims.

Operations across the North-Central reflected efforts to contain armed militias, bandits and criminal gangs threatening rural communities.
Operation WHIRL STROKE neutralised five terrorists, arrested 70 suspects and rescued 24 kidnapped victims across Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Taraba states.

The operation also eliminated a notorious terrorist kingpin known as Puuga and destroyed criminal camps used by armed groups.

Meanwhile, Operation ENDURING PEACE arrested 60 criminal suspects, rescued 18 kidnap victims and intercepted illegal firearms linked to previous attacks in Plateau and Kaduna states.

Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD also disrupted arms trafficking networks while rescuing 11 kidnapped victims and neutralising eight terrorists operating across Kwara and Niger states.

Defending Nigeria’s Economic Lifeline
In the South-South, the focus extended beyond conventional security to protecting Nigeria’s economic assets.

Operation DELTA SAFE intensified operations against crude oil theft, piracy and illegal refining, dismantling 18 illegal refining sites and recovering over 250,500 litres of stolen petroleum products.Troops also rescued 37 civilians and arrested suspects linked to oil theft and kidnapping in Rivers and Edo states.
By targeting illegal refining activities, the military is not only safeguarding national revenue but also helping to reduce the environmental devastation associated with crude oil theft.

Sustaining Pressure in the South-East
In the South-East, Operation UDO KA continued its campaign against criminal elements, including IPOB/ESN operatives, gunrunners and economic saboteurs.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 26 suspects, the rescue of 10 civilians and the recovery of weapons, ammunition and illegal bunkering facilities across Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo and Rivers states.
The operations reflect a broader strategy of disrupting criminal logistics and financing rather than focusing solely on armed engagements.

A key feature of July’s operations was the effective integration of air and ground forces.
Precision air strikes and armed reconnaissance missions conducted by the Air Component supported troops in several theatres, neutralising terrorists in Niger State and creating opportunities for kidnapped victims to escape.

The growing synergy between intelligence, surveillance and precision air operations continues to enhance the effectiveness of ground troops.

Winning Trust Beyond the Battlefield

Military operations were complemented by Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives designed to strengthen relationships with local communities.
The Armed Forces constructed community projects, mediated disputes between oil companies and host communities, facilitated peace meetings in Benue and Nasarawa states and supported public health interventions during cholera outbreaks in parts of Borno State.

These non-kinetic efforts recognise that lasting security depends not only on military victories but also on building public trust and addressing community concerns.

The Road Ahead

While the July operational results represent significant progress, Nigeria’s security challenges remain dynamic.
The Armed Forces believe that sustained success will depend on continuous intelligence gathering, closer collaboration with other security agencies and stronger partnerships with local communities.

The Defence Headquarters has therefore urged Nigerians to continue providing credible and timely intelligence, assuring citizens that all information shared through the military’s toll-free emergency line will be treated with strict confidentiality.

As troops maintain pressure across multiple theatres, the July 2026 operations demonstrate that the Armed Forces are not merely responding to security threats—they are steadily reclaiming territory, disrupting criminal enterprises and laying the foundation for a safer and more secure Nigeria.
