Nigeria Salutes Zimbabwe on 45th Independence Day, Pledges Stronger Ties

The Federal Government on Saturday congratulated Zimbabwe on its 45th Independence Day, describing the April 18 anniversary as a symbol of Africa’s “collective journey toward freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

In a statement signed by MFA Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria hailed Zimbabwe’s 1980 liberation as a “historic milestone” reflecting the “resilience, determination, and aspirations of its people.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted Zimbabwe’s role in advancing African solidarity, economic cooperation, and multilateral engagement, saying its participation in regional initiatives shows “commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southern Africa and beyond.”

*Shared Liberation Legacy*

Nigeria said both countries share “longstanding and cordial diplomatic relations rooted in common historical experiences,” including the struggle against colonialism and the pursuit of African liberation.

The statement highlighted ongoing cooperation within the African Union, UN, and other platforms to promote peace, security, and inclusive development.

*Bilateral Ties to Deepen*

Bilateral relations continue to evolve across trade and investment, education, agriculture, capacity building, and cultural exchange, the MFA said. Nigeria reaffirmed commitment to “strengthening engagement through sustained diplomatic dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation.”

It also stressed “people-to-people ties” as key to reinforcing cultural affinity and continental integration.

“Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further consolidating bilateral relations with Zimbabwe and to advancing cooperation in areas that support economic growth, democratic governance, and regional stability,” the statement read.

The Federal Government extended best wishes to Zimbabwe for “continued peace, progress, and national prosperity.”

Recall that Zimbabwe marks Independence Day every April 18, commemorating its 1980 independence from British colonial rule. Nigeria and Zimbabwe are both members of the AU and Commonwealth, with historical ties dating to Nigeria’s support for Southern Africa’s liberation movements.
